Bachmann Europe have revealed their Autumn British Railway Announcements, with N Gauge seeing two new tooling projects joining the Graham Farish range in the form of the 'Heavyweight' Class 37/7s and the 24.5ton mineral wagon, both of which are very welcome additions to the scale. Alongside the new tooling, there is also a welcome return for the BR Standard 4MT tank engine and the SECR C Class joins the Bachmann Collectors Club!

Class 37/7 'Heavyweight'

graham farish n gauge class 37/7

The Class 37 is released in a sub class never before seen in N Gauge, the 'Heavyweight' 37/7. 44 Class 37s were reworked into this subclass which was similar to the 37/5 except for the plating over of a bodyside window and the addition of a ballast weight to give extra haulage ability on the heavy freight trains such as coal and metals in South Wales, work they proved very suited to.

Bachmann state that the new Graham Farish model has been designed from the rails up and combines a precision moulded bodyshell with a high performance chassis. The full list of specifications is as follows:

MECHANISM:

  • Coreless, twin shaft motor with two flywheels providing drive to both bogies

  • All axle drive

  • Electrical pickup from all wheels

  • Separate metal bearings fitted to each axle

  • Diecast metal chassis block

  • Gearing arranged for prototypical running speeds and haulage capabilities

  • 9mm (N gauge) wheels to NEM310 standards with authentic profile and detailing

  • Removable coupling pockets to NEM355 standards fitted to each bogie

  • Designed to operate on curves of second radius (263.5mm) or greater

DETAILING:

  • High-precision, injection-moulded bodyshell with authentic moulded and engraved detail

  • Engine block detail engraved into the chassis and visible through the bodyside windows (where applicable)

  • Bogies constructed from multiple components featuring full relief detail

  • Separately applied detail parts, including roof horns and nose aerials (where applicable)

  • Separately fitted water tank/fuel tank assemblies

  • Cab Interior Detailing

  • Each model supplied with a full set of model-specific bufferbeam pipework and accessory parts including tank brackets and sandpipes

LIGHTING:

  • Directional lighting, switchable on/off at either end on DCC or Analogue control

  • Cab lighting, switchable on/off (when used on DCC only)

  • Authentic light colours and temperatures selected for each model based on era and application

DCC:

  • Next18 DCC decoder interface

SOUND:

  • Speaker installed in all models for optimum sound reproduction

  • Zimo MS581N18 DCC Sound Decoder pre-installed in SOUND FITTED versions

  • DCC Sound Decoder (Zimo MS581N18) includes an internal energy storage buffer to provide a small backup in the event of brief power interruptions at low speeds

  • Sound files produced specifically for the Graham Farish Class 37 using recordings from real locomotives

  • SOUND FITTED models operate on DCC and Analogue control as supplied

LIVERY APPLICATION:

  • Authentic liveries applied to all models

  • Multiple paint applications employed on each model using BR/TOC specification colours

  • Logos, numerals and text added as appropriate using multi-stage tampo printing process, employing authentic typefaces, logos and colours

24.5ton Mineral Wagons
Graham Farish N Gauge 24.5ton mineral wagon

Another first for N Gauge is the 24.5ton mineral wagon. BR built more than 3,300 of these large open wagons over a ten-year period from the early-1950s, with some lasting in service for three decades. Two BR Diagrams were allotted, diagrams 1/115 and 1/118, with the former built with oil axleboxes, spindle buffers and single door bumpers for each side door. The later 1/118 wagons had roller bearings, Oleo buffers and twin door bumpers and both types are catered for in the new Graham Farish tooling suite. A further option allows wagons with pressed steel doors to be modelled, alongside the more common fabricated type.

Like their 16 Ton and 21 Ton counterparts the wagons had an end door for tipping and a diagonal white line on the bodyside indicated the end at which the door was located. In addition, many had large yellow triangles on each side to identify them as higher capacity wagons when being loaded at collieries, a handy aid given their similarity to the 21 Ton versions. 378-050
